Ian Botham is one of cricket’s greatest players; England’s greatest all-rounder and leading wicket taker until Jimmy Anderson surpassed his 383 wickets in 2015.

In terms of statistics alone, and even without taking account of his massive on-field presence, entertainment value and ‘never say die’ personality, he is one of the very greatest cricketers the world has ever seen.

He played in 102 Test matches and scored fourteen centuries with a highest score of 208. He took five wickets in an innings twenty seven times. He took ten wickets in a match four times. In 1980, he became the second player in Test history to complete the ‘match double’ of scoring 100 runs and taking 10 wickets in the same match. In total in Tests, he scored 5200 runs at an average of 33.54 and took 383 wickets at an average of 28.40.

Botham has used his fame to raise money for research into childhood leukaemia. These efforts have realised millions of pounds for Bloodwise, of which he has been president since 2003.

Botham was knighted in 2007 and in 2020 it was announced that Botham would be elevated to the House of Lords, sitting as a cross bench peer.
