Four different editions of the title including the scarce 'Edition de luxe'. Editions are the pictorial 'strongly bound in cloth' edition with handwritten dedication in ink to title page 'To J.W. Goldman, with the compliments & kind regards of A.W. Shelton', dated 23rd May May 1937. Goldman's bookplate to inside front cover. Publisher's note on page v indicates an 'Edition de luxe... is being arranged for'. The scarce 'Edition de luxe' is handsomely bound in black calf with marbled endpapers, gilt to page edges, gilt title to front cover and spine with raised bands to spine. William Brittain, London 1848. Original paper wrappers. 39pp including an apology for inaccuracies on p.39. Inscribed in pencil to the front wrapper is the rare signature of A.N. Hornby (Lancashire & England 1878-1884, three Test matches), and an ink inscription in Plum Warner's hand, 'P.F. Warner. From the Rev. F.O. Poole. This manual was given to Poole- by A.N. Hornby- who gave it to me. 28/8/47'. The book preserved in modern box in blue calf and marbled boards. Included in the box is a two page handwritten letter in ink from Poole to Warner, dated 22nd August 1947, explaining that the book was given to him in 1924 by 'Monkey' Hornby the year before Hornby died. At the time Poole was the rector of Nantwich, 'I saw much of him and he was a most delightful parishioner. Bookplate of A.E. Winder to inside front wrapper. Padwick 798. A rare and interesting typescript comprising a collection of sixty cricket verses by Martineau written between c.1924 and 1958. 77pp bound in brown card boards, typed title label to front and gilt title to spine. The poems are presented in five sections titled 'Mainly Reflective', 'The Young Idea', 'Heroic Memories', 'Test and Championship', and 'War Years', and the author has recorded when and where each poem was originally published. Recorded in Padwick, no. 6496, as being 'in John Arlott's possession; a copy of the typescript is held by The Library of the Cricket Society'. This copy with a label to inside front cover with handwritten dedication in ink to 'John Arlott, with gratitude and every good wish from Gerald Martineau', and bookplate of A.E. Winder. Winder bought the copy from Arlott in 1979 for £25. Loosely inserted is a cutting of an article by Martineau, 'Cricket and Bonnie Prince Charlie' from the 'Everybody's' magazine. Good condition

Sayers Historical and Literary Society including a three page section on 'Cricket and Dorothy L. Sayers', in which he describes the interest in cricket held by Sayer's character, Lord Peter Wimsey, and the novels in which those references appear. Scowcroft also identifies other works by Sayers in which cricket is referenced, and acknowledges her knowledge and enjoyment of the game. Enclosed with the article is a two page handwritten letter dated 12th May 1981 from Scowcroft to Jim Coldham who had recently mentioned Sayers in an article in the Cricket Society Journal.
