Frank Holmes Tyson. Northamptonshire & England 1952-1960. 'Bowling a Grenade'. Excellent original pen and ink cartoon by Willie Rushton of Tyson bowling at the crease, delivering a ball depicted as a hand grenade, with the umpire cowering at the wicket. The artwork is signed by Tyson, dated 28th December 1998[?] with dedication 'To Alan [Curtis] with best wishes'. The artwork measures approx. 5"x7". Mounted, framed and glazed overall 8.75"x11.5", the mount with small gilt Lord's Taverners emblem to top border. To the verso is a label for Jack Duncan Cartoons & Books, signed by Duncan, with blind embossed stamp for The Lord's Taverners, printed provenance of 'The artist's family', and handwritten annotation in ink stating that the cartoon was reproduced on page 10 of 'The Thoughts of Trueman Now' first published in 1978. Original pen and ink, highlighted with colour, humorous caricature drawing by Chilman showing various scenes from the Third Test played at Headingley, Leeds in July 1924. The scenes refer to the team selection, with 'Jack Hobbs worth his place' (he made 211 in the previous Test), the weather, the weak South African batting etc. Players illustrated include Hobbs, Blankenberg etc. Signed and dated by Chilman, July 1924. 6.75"x9". Cricket cartoons 1920s/1930s. Original pen and ink cartoon by 'Heap' of a batsman playing an attacking shot, sending the Yorkshire bowlers flying. The captions read, 'Hey, you can't do that, we're supposed to be good' and 'Bowes and "Mac" [Macaulay] didn't give Barnet [sic] any "vertical breeze"'. The scoreboard shows the total at 34, batsman no. 1 having scored 1, and no. 2 32. It would appear that the Barnett referred to is C.J. Barnett of Gloucestershire, probably early 1930s. 6"x8.5". Pin holes to corners, damage to one edge, otherwise in good condition. Sold with an original mono pen and ink cartoon by 'Mac', dated 1929, of two cricketers and a kangaroo. One player, a batsman, is captioned in pencil 'N.C. Blackman, Vice Capt. "Aspro" Cricket XI', the other, a wicketkeeper, 'Hockley. Sports Secy. "Aspro"'. 8.5"x9.5". Pencil annotation to verso, 'For Slough Journal'. Also a newspaper cutting of a cartoon, 'High Barnett [Ben Barnett, Australia] with illustrations and commentary from the 1st Test, England v Australia, Trent Bridge 1938, and a disbound and incomplete copy of a book of Arthur Mailey cartoons of the Australian touring party 1921.
