'Britcher's Scores 1790-1805'. A boxed set of the fifteen issues in facsimile, with a commentary by David Rayvern Allen. Christopher Saunders, Newnham on Severn 2003. Published in a limited edition of 212, each set signed by Sir Tim Rice, President of M.C.C., this copy being number 55. Before Britcher, scores were notched on sticks of wood. He was among the first to put them down on paper and between 1790 and 1803 he produced an annual pamphlet listing the principal scores of the year, not just in London but around the country. The scores for 1804 and 1805 were collected into one pamphlet and published by Stanhope and Graham in 1806. The originals are very rare. This set reproduces all 15 pamphlets in exact facsimile, and they are accompanied by a lengthy commentary, specially written by David Rayvern Allen. Each set is housed in a quarter leather book box with slipcase. Includes an official invitation to the vendor to attend the book launch, and an unopened CD of 'An Index to Britcher's Scores'. [Charles Pratt] Green, 1 Park Villas, Malvern in response to advertisement in "Cricket" 24.9.[18]85" (both Holmes and Green were noted collectors of the period), and of John Arlott to front endpaper. Includes several handwritten annotations in ink to pages in Holmes' own hand with interesting references to notable cricketers who featured in the listed matches, including the Walker brothers, Harry and Thomas, of the Hambledon Club, 'Tom was most tedious to bowl to & one of the slowest runners between wickets. 'A Lay of Modern Yorkshire (Some distance after T.B.M.)'. John Quill. E.T.W. Dennis & Sons, Scarborough 1898. Seventy line poem, in the style of T.B. Macaulay, dedicated 'To the Rt. Hon. The Lord Hawke and the members of the Yorkshire County Cricket Team, 1898'. The poem was written before the end of the season after they lost their first match to the 'wily men of Kent'. Later they lost to Surrey and Middlesex but won the County Championship easily. All the main players receive a line of praise. Bound in original stiff wrappers, and tipped in to modern cream cloth. Not listed in Padwick and no other copy has been recorded. Very good condition

The pages include original advertisements but are unnumbered, possibly run off for Rait-Kerr, the author of the article, who was at the time Secretary of the M.C.C. The content of the article relates to the thirteen issues of the 'Laws of Cricket' known at the time. The article, purchased by Winder from John Arlott in 1979, is contained in a modern green slipcase with the Winder's bookplate to the inside front cover. Also included are six small pages of handwritten notes in an unknown hand concerning the Lambert family, and alluding to Lambert 'selling' matches, and a single page handwritten letter from F.S. Ashley-Cooper to G.N. Weston on the editions of the Cricketer's Guide. Horizontal and vertical folds to the article, otherwise in good condition

Robert Montague Poole (Europeans, Hampshire & South Africa 1892-1914) played in three Tests for South Africa in 1895/96. His first-class cricket in England was restricted due to his military duties, but he finished the 1899 season as the leading batsman, scoring 1551 runs at an average of 91.23 including a top score of 304 against Somerset at Taunton.

Padwick 677-1 refers to an unseen typescript of a book by Poore on cricket technique dated 1928, and it is assumed that this Ranjitsinhji title was used as source material

'A Cricketer's Prologue. Spoken in the Kentish Dialect, before the Play of "The Poor Gentlemen," at the Theatre, Canterbury, during the great Cricket Match, August 1st, 1842'. Tom Taylor. A forty five line single page printed verse delivered by 'The speaker [who] is carried on, struggling, by three men, who disappear, leaving him in astonishment'. The verse comprises references to local Kent cricket, mention of Pilch, Lillywhite and Fenner, 'Let Sussex boast her Taylor, Kent her Mynn', and a footnote referring to C.G. Taylor having damaged his arm etc. Handwritten annotation in ink states, 'This match originated the Canterbury Week', and in another hand, '[Written by Tom Taylor]'. A further note at the foot of the page reads, 'Given to me by F.P. Fenner, when calling upon him at his hotel, the "White Lion", Bath, Tues 21 May 1889', with additional comments in pencil by C.J. Britton, claiming that the later notes were written by 'Walter Baily Esq whose vols of S&B I bought...'. The sheet, with bookplate of A.E. Winder to verso, is housed in a modern slipcase with ribbon ties, with a second Winder bookplate to the inside front cover. Padwick 2089-1. No other copy known. Small stain to the original sheet, some adhesive marks to left edge from a previous binding, otherwise in good condition

The poem is an account of a match 'At Willoughby on Tuesday last'. A number of the team members are mentioned, such as 'Slogger', 'Slasher', 'Young Rowe', 'The Swiper', 'Allix [sic] with his dodgy play' etc. Odd annotations to the margins identify 'Slogger' as 'R. Palmer', and 'The Swiper' as E. Rowe, and at the foot of the page, the initials 'N.C.A.' are written, possibly that of the author. No record of the match can be found. Not listed in Padwick. Horizontal fold and light foxing, otherwise in good/ very good condition

Grace), by William Clarke ("Father of Nottinghamshire Cricket"), Secretary All England XI, Bristol v 22 [of] West Gloucestershire in 1854)' and quotes a reference from p87 of H.S. Altham's 1926 book, 'A History of Cricket', which describes Clarke presenting copies of this book while captain of the All England XI to Grace, and also to Richard Daft, whose copy was previously sold by Knights.
