Cricket Postcards, Cigarette & Trade Cards

The following collection of cricket postcards were collected by a Miss Ledgard during the summer of 1907. They are split over the next 29 lots

Yorkshire 1907. Large green 'Post Card Portrait' album containing twelve postcards and a laid down letter. The letter is from Lord Hawke on 'Huddersfield Cricket and Athletic Club' headed paper and reads 'Dear Miss Ledgard. Pleased to send you my autograph. When is summer coming?. Yours Truly Hawke', nicely signed. The letter dated July 4th 1907. The postcards depict players, Lord Hawke. Wilfred Rhodes, George Hirst, John Tunnicliffe, David Denton (all five postcards by Parkinson & Roy, Leeds), James Rothery (E. Hawkins & Co, Brighton), George Hirst, Wilfred Rhodes (both postcards by Rapid Photo), John Tunnicliffe, David Hunter, F. Stanley Jackson and Schofield Haigh (all four postcards by Hartmann). In order listed, the Hawke postcard is unsigned, the Rhodes postcard is nicely signed to face in ink, the Hirst and Tunnicliffe postcards have ink signatures on paper pieces laid down to the base of each postcard, the Denton and Rothery postcards are both nicely signed to face in ink, the Hirst, Rhodes, Tunnicliffe and Hunter postcards are nicely signed to face in ink, the Stanley Jackson signature is on a loose piece and the Schofield Haigh nicely signed to face in ink. Some silvering to the edges of the postcards of Hirst and Rhodes (Rapid) and Hunter, Jackson and Haigh(Hartmann). Minor corner damage to the card of Hirst (Rapid) otherwise in good/very good condition. All of the postcards are loosely inserted into the card album pages. A nice collection of signatures and signed Yorkshire postcards from the 1907 season

Colin Blythe was one of the principal left hand spin bowlers of the Edwardian era. He took over 2500 first class wickets with a best of 10-30 for Kent v Northamptonshire in 1907, he followed this by taking 7-18 in the second innings and with match figures of 17 wickets for 48 runs this still stands as the best bowling analysis in the County Championship. He took 100 wickets in nineteen Tests for England with a best of 8-59 v South Africa in 1907. Although Blythe suffered from epilepsy he freely volunteered for the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in 1914 and served with distinction on the Western Front. Blythe was killed in action by 'random shellfire' during the battle of Passchendaele, Belgium in November 1917

Australian born, Albert Trott played for Victoria and Middlesex between 1892 and 1910. He also is one of few players to have played for both Australia, 3 Tests and England, 2 Tests. He famously hit a ball from Monty Noble over the pavilion at Lord's whilst playing for M.C.C. v Australians in 1899. He committed suicide by shooting himself, having been ill for some time with little hope of recovery, in 1914

Mono real photograph plain back photograph depicting two record opening partnerships set by Yorkshire batsmen in front of the respective scorecards. The players are Jack Brown (300) and John Tunnicliffe (243) in the partnership of 554 set against Derbyshire in 1898, and Herbert Sutcliffe (313) and Percy Holmes (224) who scored 555 against Essex in 1932 to pass the previous record.
