M.C.C. tour of India & Ceylon 1933/34. Official single sided card menu for a Dinner held for the Marylebone Cricket Club Touring Team in India on the 30th November 1933 in Rajkot. The menu with title and raised floral decoration to top with menu printed below, to corner 'Rajkot 30-11-1933'. Signed to borders in black ink by fifteen members of the M.C.C. touring party. Signatures are D.R. Jardine (Captain), Valentine, Levett, Mitchell, Nicholls, Townsend, Langridge, Barnett, Marriott, Human, Elliott, Gregory, Clark, Verity and Bakewell. Lacking the signature of Walters from the full touring party. Minor loss to left hand border of menu card, crease to lower left corner otherwise in good condition. A rare menu and rare in this signed form. G

Cricket cuttings albums 1900s-1960s. Seven newspaper cutting albums comprising a large collection of volumes of magazine articles, newspaper cuttings, photographs, scorecards, cigarette cards etc. Each volume is numbered, some early albums with the owner's name 'Ida M. Rand' handwritten in ink to inside, and all with 'Cricket Society' labels to inside front covers. Volume I of the collection comprises extracts of magazine and newspaper articles covering 1911/12. Subjects covered include cricketers including K.L. Gibson (Essex), preparations for the 1911/12 tour to Australia and the tour itself, with articles by Home Gordon, P.R. Le Couteur (Oxford University & Victoria), C.B. Fry, Gilbert Jessop etc. Volume II, dated 1908, covers the 1907/08 tour to Australia, the return tour of 1909, and the 1909/10 tour to South Africa, with articles by Gilbert Jessop, E.H.D. Sewell, G.J.V. Weigall, R.S. Holmes, P.F. Warner, Wilfred Rhodes, A.A. Lilley etc. Volume IV covers the Triangular Test series of 1912, the 1913/14 M.C.C. tour to South Africa, also the 1934 Ashes series, the 1934/35 tour to West Indies, and the 1935 visit of the South Africans. Included are a number of photograph plates from 'The Captain' magazine. Also a mono press photograph of the South Africa wicketkeeper, Jock Cameron, with press obituaries on his death in 1935 aged only 30. Volume V covers the 1908 season and includes two small advertising leaflets produced by Wright & Co, London, one featuring Tom Hayward, the other E.G. Hayes. Articles include an obituary for Albert Craig, the cricket rhymester, and a seven page handwritten transcription of an article 'How to Win Matches' by Morice C. Bird (Surrey & England), apparently written in the hand of the album's owner, Ida Rand. Also includes articles on Hobbs' retirement in 1934. Volume VI is dedicated to articles relating to the 'D'Oliveira affair' and the cancellation of the 1968/69 tour to South Africa. Volume VII has good content relating to the state of the game c1913-1915, including an article on 'The Morals of County Cricket' by C.B. Fry. Also coverage of the deaths of W.G. Grace, A.O. Jones etc, and articles and obitiuaries from the 1930s. Volume VIII covers the period 1930s-1960s. Subjects include unrest in the Indian touring party to England in 1936, England in Australia 1936/37, county cricket in 1938, cricket during World War II, the 1946/47 tour to Australia, Coronation Ashes series of 1953, two original mono press photographs, official complete printed scorecard for England's record win against Australia at The Oval, 1938. Also eight loosely inserted wartime scorecards for matches played at Lord's in 1940 including British Empires XI v London Counties XI, Eleven of Lord's v Eleven of Middlesex, London Air Force v London Fire Service, Sir Pelham Warner's XI v Club Cricket Conference, West Indies v Sir Pelham Warner's XI etc, all in very good condition. A Christmas card with two mono candid style photographs of the 1953 Oval Test, official menus for a dinner given by The Cricket Society and the Association of Cricket Umpires 'In honour of the Canadian Touring Team' 1954, signed in ink by six members of the Canadian touring party and Douglas Jardine in pencil. Also a menu for a dinner held at Lord's Tavern in June 1959 for George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes on the publication of a book by A.A. Thomson 1959, signed in ink by eight attendees including Rhodes, Barnes, Sutcliffe, Thomson etc. Good condition

Volume III of the collection which relates to Denis Compton is being sold as lot 1491 in the football section of this catalogue. The Cricket Society informs the auctioneer that these albums were passed to the Society by G.D. Martineau. There is no evidence to that effect but it is assumed he acquired them during his life.

Gerald Durani Martineau was a prolific cricket writer. The identity of Ida Rand is not known
