Edward Verrall Lucas (1868-1938) was a famous English humorist, essayist, playwright, biographer, publisher, poet, novelist, short story writer and editor. He had an enduring interest in cricket and was a member of J. M. Barrie's team the 'Allahakbaris', along with Henry Herbert La Thangue and Arthur Conan Doyle. Rupert Hart-Davis collected and published a collection of Lucas's essays, Cricket All His Life, which John Arlott called 'the best written of all books on cricket'. He died in 1938, aged 70

Bagguley of Newcastle, Staffordshire, bookseller, bookbinder, fine art dealer, in full calf, tooled gilt edges, raised spine bands, marbled end-papers and pages edges in gilt. Unusually this copy of the standard edition has an inserted beige advertisement leaf before the title page. Signature of ownership of S[tephen] Woods to the front endpaper, together with a letter from Grace to Woods, with the original envelope tipped in. Woods was a cricket historian who wrote for Cricket and the London Evening News. The single page letter from Grace, dated 'Bristol Jan 14 [1894]' concerns W.G. 'hitting a ball over the Stand at Lord's'. Accompanying the book is a letter from Bagguley to A.E. Reeves dated 'May 13 [19]39' explaining that he has given the book, which 'is really worth a place in any cricketer's library and has good market value' to the fund to raise money to clear the debt incurred building the new swimming bath at Newcastle High School. He adds a handwritten note stating that he 'played his last game of cricket last summer at the age of 78 in Scotland with schoolboys, taking 3 wickets for 2 runs'. Also enclosed is a notice about the book, wrongly attributing its ownership to S.M.J. Woods, and some raffle tickets. All the items are contained in a modern box with the title to spine and Grace's signature in gilt on the front cover. A unique item with fine associations in excellent condition

Vol. I No. 7, 23rd March 1895. This issue has a 'Supplement Presented Gratis with this Number', containing 'Portraits of the Victorious Team'. The centrefold supplement has portraits of eleven players of the English team who won the 1894/95 series, with the captain Stoddart in the centre. Tipped in to modern blue cloth, original orange wrappers preserved. The original publication also includes a photograph of the Australian batsman, F.A. Iredale, practising in the nets at Adelaide. Not recorded in Padwick. Minor ageing, otherwise in good/ very good condition. Very rare
